Spencer was arrested for killing his mother and brother but was eventually released due to lack of evidence. He's innocent but a lot of people didn't/still don't believe that.

Maybe Levi could be one of the cops who worked on the case or something and had a hand in getting him off the hook? Spencer's thoughts definitely would have been loud at the time so perhaps that's how Levi could have known he was innocent. OR SOMETHING, IDK!

Oh man, I love that idea. He could definitely pick up on Spencer's sincerity that he was innocent and have works extra hard to prove it.

Levi was pretty much a complete wall flower until partway through his junior year. Will very well might have thought he was a transfer student if he noticed him at all.
